Handcraft Doughnuts, located at 1369 New York Ave NE, Washington, D.C. which is only a five minute drive from your RESA apartment ensuring you’ll be the first in line, is the dream of husband-and-wife team Kara Terrell and Ike Emejuru who aspired to create a community in Washington D.C., centered around small batch, handmade, fresh artisanal doughnuts, and making good memories.
The couple began their wild journey into the pastry world after their love of travel and adventure led them to some very unique pastry experiences. It turns out that their most memorable experience was in Kenya, alongside a giraffe named Daisy, where they shared pastries together. They enrolled in a local doughnut-making class, spent time working on recipes, bootstrapped in a commercial kitchen, and two years later, the rest was history.
Firehook Bakery & Coffee House, located at 441 4th St NW, Washington, D.C. which is a seven minute drive from your RESA apartment, is a bakery offering artisanal breads and rolls, plus pastries, doughnuts, cookies, cupcakes, light fare and coffee.
Anthropologists say that the first known bakers used clay pots and baked in sunken fire-pits. The bakers used a hook-shaped tool to pull their baked goods out of the fire. So in 1992, the owners thought naming their bakery “Firehook” would be just right to guide their authentic baking mission.
