Don’t wait until autumn to head to the farm for pick-your-own fruit – instead, head to one of the many farmstands in the area or one of the farms located right outside of Washington, D.C. for your very own blueberries, as July is the best time to get these delicious berries in our area.
Take your blueberries home to your RESA kitchen and bake in blueberry pie, blueberry pancakes, blueberry scones and more. We promise – their journey from these farms will be worth the trip to your RESA apartment!
Homestead Farm, located at 15604 Sugarland Rd, Poolesville, MD which is worth every minute of its 45 minute journey from your RESA apartment, offers seasonal blueberry picking at this farm with a petting zoo as well as a store selling homemade honey.
Visitors can come to Homestead Farm with their own container (or purchase one here) and pick blueberries for $3 per pound. They’re open seven days a week – rain or shine – from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., however, careful about visiting early in the week. After a busy weekend, many of the ripened blueberries have been picked!
Shlagel Farms, located at 12850 Shlagel Rd, Waldorf, MD which will you take you 35 minutes to get to by car, is a century-old, family-owned farm that offers berry picking depending on the season, as well as a CSA program. You can also find many of their products at local farmers markets.
As sustainable and responsible farmers, Shlagel Farms uses no till planting whenever possible to reduce the disturbance and loss of the soil. They also work to reduce the use of pesticides, so you can feel confident picking here that you are getting some of the freshest and safest fruit available.
