With beautiful blooms every color of the rainbow, our Washington DC gardens are at their very best this month as spring is in full force! If you want to see them up close, you don’t have to venture far – there are lots of gardens near our RESA apartments that are ripe for exploring.
This weekend, get off the couch and instead, get some fresh air at some of these photo-worthy gardens that are only a short drive from home. It’s the perfect opportunity to get a walk in and enjoy the sunshine!
Kathrine Dulin Folger Rose Garden, located at 900 Jefferson Dr SW #922, Washington, DC which is a 12 minute journey from your RESA apartment, has been a treasured component of the Smithsonian landscape since 1998. This four-season garden showcases roses as well as types of plantings that support healthy relationships between people, plants, and insects.
Originally designed to showcase modern roses, the garden was expanded and renovated in 2016 to feature all own-root roses selected for disease resistance as well as companion plantings chosen to attract and provide for beneficial insects. Interpretive signage installed throughout the garden highlights the rose family, history, fragrance and companion plantings.
Floral Library, located at Independence Ave SW, Washington, DC which clocks in at a 14 minute drive from your RESA apartment, is a vibrant garden near the Tidal Basin showcasing a wide range of tulips and annuals grouped by variety.
Also known as the Tulip Library, the Floral Library was established in 1969 as part of Lady Bird Johnson’s Capital Beautification Project. The ‘library’ has 93 flower beds maintained by the National Park Service. These beds feature either tulips or annuals depending on the planting season. The flowers require up to 10,000 bulbs to be planted by hand each year.
