It may only be the start of fall in Washington, DC, but it’s actually the perfect time to go apple picking! Right now, apples are ripe for the picking at our many local apple farms and are ready for use in pies, cakes and other dishes, as well as tasty right off the branch.
This weekend, take the whole family to one of these apple farms located near your RESA apartment. With their hayrides, farm markets, mazes and children’s activities, you can make a whole day of it, ringing in autumn in the most festive way possible.
Homestead Farm, located at 15604 Sugarland Rd, Poolesville MD which is a 45 minute drive from your RESA apartment, offers varieties such as Crimsoncrisp, Jonagold and Cortland pick-your-own apples.
Families can also meet the on-site farm animals and picnic on the farm, which is open seven days a week, rain or shine, so feel free to stop by here anytime. Plus, onsite is a market which stocks items such as vegetables, preserves and local honey.
Butler’s Orchard, located at 22222 Davis Mill Rd, Germantown, MD which will take you 45 minutes to arrive at by car, is a great farm for families since it includes wooden play structures and giant slides. Bring a picnic or buy food at Butler’s market to supplement your picked apples.
You can also organize a pick-your-own group outing with at least 20 friends. You’ll meet a farmer in a reserved field and learn about the farm and crops, as well as enjoy a 20-minute tractor-driven wagon ride.
