It can be tough to find ways to stay active – and off your RESA couch – when it’s freezing outside. However, in a city with as many activities as Washington, D.C., there’s lots of outdoor fun that can keep you feeling energized while warming you up.
That’s where ice skating comes in! At these rinks throughout the city, you can either rent skates or bring your own to enjoy an afternoon or evening circling the ice and getting in the holiday spirit. Plus, many of them offer hot snacks, like hot chocolate or mulled cider, to help keep the chill away.
National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink, located at Constitution Ave NW &, 7th St NW, Washington, D.C. which is just a hop, skip and jump from your RESA apartment at only 10 minutes away, is open through March 3 every weekday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and 11 p.m. on weekends.
Besides visiting for a session of ice skating every once in a while, you can also purchase a season pass or even take skating lessons to become a true master on the rink. The Pavilion Café is also open for business during most of the rink’s open hours, and it offers everything from toasted sandwiches to quiches to beer.
Canal Park Ice Skating, located at 200 M St SE, Washington, D.C. which is an easy 13 minute drive from your RESA apartment, is open everyday. Admission varies with a $5 skate rental if needed. A limited number of rental skates are available (from toddler size 8 to adult size 15) on a first-come, first-served basis.
Skating sessions are 90 minutes long, with a break at the halfway point to resurface the ice. Each 90-minute session is separated by a 15-minute intermission to allow time for rental skates to be returned and disinfected before the following session.
