And even though we live in a bustling city, we’re only a short drive away from stunning wineries right outside of Washington, D.C. – or even in the city thanks to urban wineries.
This September, take advantage of the spectacular weather by heading out to one of these wineries making local wine with homegrown grapes. Don’t hesitate to bring home a bottle to your RESA apartment!
Woodlawn Press Winery, located at 8733-B Cooper Rd, Alexandria, VA which will take you 37 minutes to get to by car, is an urban microwinery owned by married couple Andrew and Bonnie that prides itself on making wine using similar methods to how Bonnie’s family made wine 100 years ago.
Andrew learned much of what he knows about making wine from Bonnie’s cousin and her husband, Angela and John, who were the trailblazers in the family to start the first microwinery in Washington, Pennsylvania. Bonnie’s sister and her husband, Maria and Josh, were also strong influencers and supporters prior to opening Woodlawn Press Winery.
Maryland Meadworks, located at 4700 Rhode Island Ave Suite Bee, Hyattsville, MD which is 20 minutes from your RESA apartment, makes mead, which is honey wine. It combines ancient wisdom with modern knowledge to craft a diverse selection of delicious mead using natural processes and locally sourced ingredients.
Their meads range from sweet to semi-sweet to dry. They also offer both still and sparkling mead varieties and have up to eight meads on tap in the tasting room. Maryland Meadworks produces traditional mead as well as exciting new varieties that incorporate fruit, herbs, spices and other natural flavors such as coffee, tea and hops.
